Job Summary
The Packaging Technician is responsible for the efficient operation of various packaging machinery to include: setting-up, disassembling, cleaning, and basic maintenance on packaging equipment. The Special Machine Operator II must demonstrate certification and mastery on a minimum of three packaging lines with PLC controlled, high-speed (110+upm equipment. Demonstrate strong leadership skills to optimize package line performance through machine utilization with accountability for downtime.
Role Specific Responsibilities
Performs set-up and prepares line for packaging- various packaging equipment.
Disassemble, clean and changeover package filler for product changes in accordance with Chattem procedures to comply with FDA-cGMP’s.
Provides packaging supplies and bulk product as required to feed packaging machines and change as necessary (i.e. bottles, labels, and caps).
Continually observes product and materials being used and rejects any substandard materials or packages not in conformance with FDA-cGMP’s.
Document, monitor, and maintain proper product quality including fill levels, torque, etc. as based on the Standard Packaging Instructions and Standard Operating Procedures.
Identify and implement methods to maximize product yields and minimize product waste. Collect date for downtime, product monitoring parameters (ex. Temperature, weight, quality) etc.
Observe operation of equipment and make minor mechanical repairs or request mechanics help as required.
Perform routine diagnostic and preventative maintenance on package filler. Interact with maintenance and service technicians to repair filler. Perform basic maintenance on other package equipment including changeover and adjustment.
Indentify best practices; write procedures and train line personnel and machine operators.
Maintain a safe work area and observe all company safety regulations.
Interfaces
Must be able to work with Manager, Team Leader, and core team to optimize package line performance through machine utilization, maximize product yields, minimize waste, and efficient labor usage.

Qualifications
Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.
Experience: Vocational training or on-the-job experience required.
Professional Skills: Must work in a pleasant and cooperative manner. Must demonstrate leadership qualities such as positive attitude, willingness to accept new assignments, be assertive, time-efficient, and thorough. Able to enlist crew and support personnel to be proactive to identify improvement opportunities or solve current problems. Must maintain a satisfactory attendance record.
Role Specific Competencies: Must demonstrate exceptional mechanical skills and be able to identify potential maintenance problems. Must be able to lift heavy loads 25-50 pounds and to handle weights up to 500 pounds with mechanical assistance. Must be able to train and certify new machine operators.
Special Requirements: Position is based in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Dress requirements include uniforms, hair covers and/or head covering, safety shoes, gloves, dust masks, and safety glasses as required by job conditions, provided by Chattem Consumer Products. Training will be required as needed and determined by department supervisor to ensure Chattem Consumer Products procedures compliance as required by FDA-cGMP’s. Job conditions include some exposure to product, dust, and grease in work area and exposure to recognized hazards of packing machinery. Must successfully complete required pre-employment testing.
