Description
Akura Medical, a Shifamed portfolio company, is seeking an accomplished Principal Software Engineer to lead the design, architecture, and integration of next-generation medical imaging systems. In this senior technical leadership role, you will define technical strategy, drive system-level innovation, and collaborate across disciplines to deliver imaging solutions that meet the highest standards of performance, safety, and compliance. This role emphasizes deep technical expertise and strategic problem-solving, enabling breakthrough advances in patient care without relying on traditional management layers. This is a full-time, on-site position at our Los Gatos, CA offices.
 
Responsibilities, Skills & Hands-On Experience
Serve as the technical authority for the design, architecture, and integration of advanced medical imaging platforms.
Define and execute long-term technology roadmaps that align with company objectives and clinical needs.
Drive system-level innovation across imaging algorithms, visualization tools, AI/ML integration, and cloud-based solutions.
Lead high-level trade-off analyses and risk assessments to inform strategic design decisions.
Collaborate with R&D, clinical, regulatory, and manufacturing leaders to ensure solutions are scalable, manufacturable, and compliant with FDA, ISO 13485, and other standards.
Establish best practices for system verification, validation, and cybersecurity within imaging platforms.
Mentor and elevate engineers across the organization, fostering a culture of technical excellence and innovation.
Build and manage partnerships with academic collaborators, vendors, and external technology partners.
Represent Shifamed as a thought leader through patents, publications, and conference presentations.
 
Education & Work Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field (advanced degree strongly preferred).
12+ years of experience in medical imaging system design, with a track record of leading complex programs from concept to regulatory clearance.
Deep expertise in imaging modalities (e.g., X-ray, MRI, ultrasound) and advanced image processing algorithms.
Proficiency in relevant software and system development tools (e.g., MATLAB, Python, C++, VTK, Qt/QML).
Proven experience architecting on-prem as well as cloud-based imaging solutions and integrating AI/ML methods for computer vision and diagnostic applications.
Strong knowledge of regulatory and quality frameworks (e.g., FDA, ISO 13485, IEC 60601), including cybersecurity best practices.
Demonstrated record of innovation, evidenced by patents, publications, or recognized industry contributions.
Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to align multidisciplinary teams around a shared technical vision.
Success thriving in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
 
Our salary ranges are calculated by role, level, and location. Please note that your position within that range will be determined by your job-related knowledge, location, skills, experience, relevant education, and training/certifications. The base salary range for this full-time position is between $190,000 to $220,000 + equity + benefits.
