Reporting directly to the VP of Product Development, the Senior Product Development Engineer will lead the development and continuous improvement of mattress and pillow products. The position owns product performance testing, ergonomics research, and prototyping, and while driving projects from concept through launch and into production. It also involves hands-on research, vendor collaboration, and field issue resolution to ensure high-quality, reliable products in the market.

Casper has a full portfolio of obsessively engineered sleep products—including mattresses, pillows and bedding—designed by the Company’s in-house design team. In addition to its e-commerce business, Casper has over 40 retail locations across the United States and its products are available at a number of retailers.
This is a hybrid role, requiring that you work 3 days per week from our NYC office.
When you’re not catching zzz’s, this is what you’ll do...
- Work directly with a team of industrial designers, engineers, and product developers to develop new mattress and pillow products and lead the continuous improvement of existing products
- Lead all new product performance claim and reliability testing, with collaboration from quality, compliance, and marketing
- Manage Casper Lab equipment and testing procedures
- Build upon Casper ergonomics research, integrating learnings into new products and leading new ergonomics research products
- Act as product development lead on select projects, managing launch calendars, coordinating teams, and leading design reviews
- Work in different materials and fidelities, from quick experimental mock-ups to meticulous mechanical prototypes
- Develop CAD databases and drawing packages to support the development of products and handoffs to manufacturers
- Research materials and component technologies to scope development opportunities
- Conduct field failure analysis and solution evaluation for production product issues
- Source and engage with manufacturers and vendors
- Work with Manufacturing and Quality teams to launch new products and manage ongoing improvements on in-market products
Our dream candidate is/has…
- Passionate about creating new physical products, with 8+ years of product development experience, ideally with a focus on furniture, soft goods, and/or consumer products
- Experienced working with a variety of materials including, but not limited to, polyurethane foam, textiles, upholstery, and plastics
- Experience or desire to lead a project, including managing calendars and coordinating teams
- Supports design decisions with engineering calculations, research, and experimentation
- Strong foundation in mechanical engineering fundamentals, including solid mechanics and thermodynamics, and knowledge of basic engineering materials and manufacturing processes
- Proactive problem solving, with experience in failure analysis, root cause investigation, and DOE creation
- Skilled in SolidWorks 3D CAD
- Basic GD&T knowledge and experience releasing 2D drawings
- Experience with project management tools, such as Smartsheet, MS Project, or Asana
- Working knowledge of FEA principles
- Has shipped product
- Experience working through DFM challenges with external vendors
- Has experience with Product Lifecycle Management tools (PLM software), requirements management tools and/or configuration management
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
Targeted Annual Base Salary Range: $125,000-160,000 USD
Casper’s compensation philosophy ensures that the actual base salary is based on factors including but not limited to skills, education, experience, special training, time in position, and/or years of service.
