What makes a Signalite?

Signalites are the incredible people who make up CodeSignal’s global team. We believe every Signalite should be given the context to understand decisions, the freedom to act independently, and the responsibility to do what’s right. These principles build upon each other to drive motivation, speed, innovation, and a results-oriented, high-performing culture. We believe that culture is not just about principles, but also behaviors. This belief can be seen and felt in everything we do as Signalites.

The Role

We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Learn engineering team. You'll be the people manager and technical leader for a small, talented team building our practice-first learning products - the newest and fastest-growing part of CodeSignal's platform.
This is a hands-on technical leadership role. You'll stay close to the team: reviewing PRs, guiding architectural decisions, and providing clarity. As a manager, you will also coach your engineers, remove blockers, and partner with Product to make sure the team is delivering the right features at the right time.
This role is for you if:
  • You've managed engineers before and want to keep doing it
  • You're energized by growing people, not just shipping code
  • But, you also believe great engineering managers stay technical
  • You want to work on a product with real educational impact, used by learners worldwide

Why this role is exciting:

  • High-growth product: Learn is our newest product area with strong momentum since launch.
  • Consumer-facing and relatable: This is a product regular people choose to level up their skills. You'll build something your friends and family can actually try.
  • Meaningful AI: We're using AI in ways that genuinely help people learn, not just as a buzzword. You'll work on hard, interesting problems at the intersection of AI and education.
  • Both dimensions of leadership: This role blends technical leadership with people development. If you want to grow as both a technologist and a manager, not just pick one lane, this might be the role for you.
  • Small team, clear impact: Our team is tight-knit. You'd work directly with the leadership team, and your decisions would matter to the success of the business.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Day-to-Day

As a people manager, you will:
  • Run regular 1:1s with your direct reports and support their career growth
  • Hire, onboard, and develop engineers as the team evolves
  • Create an environment where engineers can do their best work
  • Handle performance management with candor and care
As a technical leader, you will:
  • Own technical direction for the web platform
  • Review code, guide architectural decisions, and maintain high engineering standards
  • Jump into the codebase when needed to guide or unblock the team
  • Partner with Product and Design to shape what we build and how we build it

Basic Qualifications

  • 2+ years of engineering management experience.
  • 5+ years of full-time professional software engineering experience, with web or mobile application engineering experience preferred.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication, with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Availability to work US Pacific hours. This is a remote role, but the team is centered around US Pacific time. Candidates in or near Pacific time are preferred.

Bonus Points

  • Experience with any part of our stack, including TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node, PostgreSQL, MongoDB. Familiarity with React Native is a plus.
  • Familiarity with React Native or mobile development (relevant for our Cosmo mobile app).
  • Background in EdTech, HR Tech, or assessment/learning products.
  • Experience growing or scaling a small engineering team, especially at a tech startup or scale-up.
