IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.

We are building our vacuum systems team to support the next generation of IonQ’s quantum computers. As a senior mechanical engineer, you’ll be responsible for designing and building state-of-the-art systems that form the core of a trapped-ion quantum computer and operate at extreme high vacuum (XHV) pressures. The ideal candidate possesses a strong mechanical aptitude and an understanding of scientific instruments. This includes experience working with both cryogenic and room temperature vacuum systems, as well as the ability to understand the optical and electrical interfaces needed to operate ion traps. This position is at the intersection of multiple scientific and engineering disciplines. You would be an integral part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world’s best quantum computers to solve the world’s most complex problems.

Responsibilities:

  • Designing and prototyping precision of XHV-compatible components and their interfaces with electrical and optical subassemblies
  • Troubleshooting, debugging, and developing solutions to electro-mechanical problems on the fly
  • Developing procedures to assemble and test complex mechanical, electrical, and optical subassemblies
  • Assembly, operation, and maintenance of cryogenic systems
  • Operating of rough, high, and ultra-high vacuum (UHV) pumps and gauges
  • Implementing cryogenic and XHV best practices
  • On-site installation and commissioning of quantum computers

You’d be a good fit with:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in a mechanical, vacuum, or cryogenic engineering role
  • Experience building and operating cryogenic systems and/or vacuum systems
  • Skill with soldering and working with small PCBs and wires
  • Strong mechanical aptitude
  • Strong fine motor skills
  • Experience with 3D-CAD and GD&T

You’d be a great fit with:

  • 10 years of industry or academic experience in a relevant field
  • Experience working with vacuum systems in AMO applications
  • Experience working with lasers and optical assemblies
  • Experience working with and debugging electronics
  • Knowledge of advanced pumping mechanisms
  • Good communication and documentation skills
  • Experience developing, conducting, and analyzing experiments and interpreting results
  • Advanced degree in engineering, physics, or chemistry
  • Experience with steady-state thermal, static structural, and/or modal FEA.
