IonQ is developing the world's most powerful full-stack quantum computer based on trapped-ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology to unlock a new era of computing. Quantum computing has the potential to impact every area of human society for the better. IonQ’s computers will soon redefine industries like medicine, materials science, finance, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cryptography, and more. IonQ is at the forefront of this technological revolution.

We are looking for a Senior Manufacturing Engineer specializing in New Product Introduction (NPI) for our Control Electronics subsystems. As an NPI Engineer, you'll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world's best quantum computers to solve the world's most complex problems. In this role, you will serve as a critical link between our design teams, in-house production, and external manufacturing partners.

Your primary focus will be to own all control electronics subsystems from an NPI and Manufacturing Engineering perspective. This involves leading the outsourcing of our control electronics subassemblies, executing NPI activities for all new programs, and being hands-on building and integrating quantum computers from a control electronics (PCBA, box build, and cabling) perspective. You will work cross-functionally to improve designs, develop scalable processes, and support the implementation of a robust supply chain for our control electronics.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with contract manufacturers across various disciplines (PCBA fab, assembly, etc.) to develop repeatable, sustained processes for quick-turn development as well as at-scale production
  • Work with technicians and other engineers hands-on, building prototype hardware, with an emphasis on the assembly and testing of electromechanical components.
  • Leverage expertise in New Product Introduction (NPI) to seamlessly transition our control electronics subsystems from prototype to production, optimizing for manufacturability, cost, and supply chain scalability
  • Supports the selection, qualification, and management of Contract Manufacturers (CMs) and suppliers for PCBAs, box builds, and cable assemblies.
  • Collaborate with electrical and mechanical design engineers to provide Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Assembly (DFA), and Test (DFT) feedback, ensuring products are optimized for efficient manufacturing processes.
  • Engage in design reviews and the examination of deliverables necessary for a Technical Data Package for our electronics assemblies.
  • Develop process flows, breaking down large, complex assemblies into a logical part flow of subassemblies and sub-processes
  • Develop, improve, and document manufacturing processes for successfully manufacturing control electronics hardware, including detailed assembly instructions, inspection requirements, and standard operating procedures.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with design engineering, quality engineering, and supply chain teams to resolve manufacturing challenges.
  • Support system-level integration and bring-up of control electronics, including device configuration, loading control software and drivers, and troubleshooting hardware/software interface issues.
  • Apply Configuration Management best practices to hardware designs and manufacturing processes.

You’d be a good fit with:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, with a focus on electronics assembly, NPI, and outsourcing in a low-volume, high-mix production environment.
  • Experience with the manufacturing, integration, and testing of systems containing sensitive analog and RF components (e.g., DACs/ADCs, RF electronics, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively deliver electromechanical hardware in resource-constrained environments, valuable for innovative quantum computing solutions.
  • Direct hands-on manufacturing experience in physically building hardware through machining, fabrication, soldering, assembly, installation, etc. (Personal or extracurricular projects are a plus).
  • Experience transforming R&D prototypes into highly reproducible products.
  • Collaboration with cross-functional development teams including engineering, research, and development.
  • Experience developing comprehensive assembly instructions and other manufacturing documentation.
  • Experience in implementation, use or configuration of PLM systems.
  • A genuine interest and passion in manufacturing along with a strong desire to continuously learn.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, particularly an applied ability to work well with customers, suppliers, and in a close-knit team environment.
  • Ability to act independently to uncover and resolve issues associated with the development and implementation of operational programs and factories and/or supplier health development.
  • Ability to be on-site daily.

You’d be a great fit with:

  • Deep experience managing Contract Manufacturers (CMs), from sourcing and qualification to production ramp-up.
  • Deep PCBA fabrication experience including prior work with or setup/modification/monitoring SMT processes. harnessing, soldering, crimping hands on build experience
  • Proficiency in CAD software for designing tooling and fixtures; familiarity with EDA/ECAD tools (e.g., Altium, OrCAD) is a strong plus.
  • Expertise in PCBA manufacturing processes (e.g., SMT, reflow, wave solder) and relevant quality standards (e.g., IPC-A-610, J-STD-001).
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python) for test automation, device control, and basic modification of control software or drivers.
  • Hands-on experience with electronic test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, logic analyzers) and software tools for debugging system integration issues.
