Job Summary

The Sr Data Analyst (DAMP) is part of the Enterprise Data Governance Team at Canada Life and plays an essential role in the advancement of our data strategy and maintenance of existing Data Governance Practices and will be focused on managing unstructured data. This role provides the opportunity to balance enablement of our business with the governance of our data assets to ensure the trust and protection of the data in our care.

The role will focus on analyzing and interpreting data discovery results, identifying potential issues related to data governance, privacy, security, and other related policies and standards within the scope of the program.

Essential Function

  • Develop in optimizing and integrating common denominator capabilities in a centralized enterprise shared service with data discovery, data classification and data ownership across Identity Access Management (IAM), Privacy, Data Loss Prevention (DLP) and Data Governance teams
  • Perform Data Discovery (Pattern Matching, AI/ML, Semantic, Contextual) across both structured and unstructured data stores (Fileshares, SharePoint, Teams, OneDrive, Big Data, AWS S3 buckets, etc.) across Cloud, On-prem and SaaS platforms
  • Create a data catalog that defines and organizes all sensitive data elements (e.g., MS Purview, Collibra, etc.)
  • Remediating sensitive data handling gaps identified by data solution with focus on unstructured data (e.g., if firm mandates CCN should be encrypted and DAM solution identifies plain text CCN, right to be to be forgotten)
  • Tracking and triage on unstructured data being retained for more than the retention duration and find solutions to remediate
  • Support strategic decisions, issues, risks, and milestones related to data initiatives with risk reduction through remediation of high-risk sensitive data findings
  • Support the development, maintenance, and enhancement our data governance policy, standards, processes, and practices with focus on managing “Unstructured Data”
  • Develop a process on remediating issues or gaps identified in operating and managing the program in conjunction with Data Governance requirements in line with its policy, standard, guidelines, and procedures
  • Support technology discovery (early-stage assessments, POCs) in support of Business Unit (BU) strategy
  • Identify and assess all risks communicating impacts with the BU data domains for resolution

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science and/or Software Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of Data Loss Prevention (DLP) methodology, encryption techniques, prevention of data breaches/exfiltration
  • Working knowledge of data governance and management technology asset (e.g. Microsoft Purview, Informatica)
  • Min 5+ years of multi-disciplinary experience in a large, complex organization (insurance or financial services preferred)
  • 1-4 years of applied data governance experience with expertise in managing unstructured data
  • Knowledge of data retention and disposition regulations and requirements
  • Experience in identifying and tagging unstructured metadata with sensitivity and/or confidentiality data types
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Expert knowledge of API integration patterns and authentication methods
  • Experience in tracking and triaging results for flagged rules on unstructured/digital data (e.g., Bill 64/Rule 25, PIPEDA, PCI DSS, retention/disposition rules)/ rule violation instances
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure or GCP
  • Experience in metadata analysis and tagging; Microsoft products excel, Purview and using minimal SQL coding via Databricks to assist with developing regular expressions.
