The Sr. Manager, Business Development will work closely with the Greater China Specialty Care Business Development Lead, to identify, evaluate and operationalize new growth opportunities for China, as well as opportunities relevant for Sanofi globally supporting the development of Sanofi’s pipeline.

In particular, the individual will take ownership of the following strategic initiatives:

Lead BD opportunities and other Strategic Alliance activities in the Region to support the Group development strategy and strengthen its position in China as well as globally, through all steps including identification, analysis, cross-functional evaluation and due diligence. In China for China/Global for China : Support Strategic Direction and development of sustainable and growing business across divisions (Specialty) including (a) acquisition of brands/companies, and (b) implementation of development activities across divisions including through in-licensing, (c) complex alliances and partnerships, including Joint-ventures, innovative partnering models, etc. In China for Global, this position will support to external opportunity scouting and assessment for Sanofi’s R&D units, including opportunities across the entire drug development value chain, from discovery to commercial stage products, with a wide variety of deal types from research collaborations to in-licensing activities. Promote cross-functional collaboration within Sanofi Partnering, especially with therapeutic area business development and external innovation leads, as well as with internal business partners (R&D, Commercial, Finance, Legal, Patent, Manufacturing, etc.) to establish and maintain necessary governance, processes, corporate priorities and guidelines. Maintain awareness and knowledge of business ecosystem including understanding of trends, companies and key stakeholders Role model our company culture and Play to Win strategy.

While the position holder may progressively focus on one partnering area, the intent is not to define it specifically as development of capabilities will also come from multiple exposure to different forms of partnerships, businesses and stakeholders. The successful candidate in the position will have the opportunity to very quickly grow in responsibilities, when it comes to independence, ability to interact with internal and external senior stakholders, including CEOs and their respective boards and senior management, as well as up to the Executive Committee of Sanofi internally.

  • Ability to work transversally and lead/work with a cross functional team, communication facilitator, and effectively collaborate with internal stakeholders throughout the partnering process.
  • Ability to operate in and be comfortable with ambiguity.
  • If not coming from the healthcare industry, ability to learn fast and be able to draw some learnings and comparisons between industries and/or key strategic challenges and add value for Sanofi.
  • Understand and know how to navigate the China and Global biopharmaceutical market, including companies, products, and company strategies that enable be able to effectively work with key partners
  • Maintain key external relationships while identifying new potential partners within the areas assigned
  • Track and communicate ongoing industry developments to the internal team members and stay up-to-date on the competitive environment

Technical competency

The selected candidate would be expected to display some or all of the below, and at least have the appetite to develop them in the near future.

  • Medical/pharmacology / industry knowledge / New Technologies (Digital, AI, etc.)
  • Excellent project management and analytical skills, with experience in an environment requiring significant data analysis and cross-functional interaction.
  • Understanding of Financial modelling and valuation
  • Deal structuring and negotiation

Educational Qualification / Experience


  • Essential: Degree qualifications in a health related discipline
  • Preferred: PhD, MD from leading institution


  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience with a leading Pharmaceutical/Biotech/HealthCare company (or in a field relevant to healthcare key strategic issues) / Management consulting and/or investment banking and / or VC, PE in BD/R&D/ and/or in leadership roles.
  • R&D experience as lab head is preferred
  • Proven track record of success and value creation in previous roles
  • Strong exposure to China environment and how business is done in China, including various healthcare businesses such as Pharmaetc., and good understanding of key success drivers for these businesses Existing external China network is a plus
  • Internal candidates must bring a well-developed internal network and strong understanding of internal dynamics and decision-making to the table with experience working closely with other functions such as R&D, IA, NPP and Medical, is highly desirable
