The Team
Upstart’s Auto Retail team is building the future for car buying. We believe that the seamless, digital experiences we already use every day in other areas of our lives should be carried over to auto retail and integrated with the showroom experience at dealerships. Think of it as the perfect combination of Apple’s intuitive and elegant online-to-in-store shopping, Amazon’s obsession with convenience and seamless operations, and AI’s ability to streamline and enhance the lending experience—all applied to car shopping.
Our Sales Engineers are key members of the Sales team. They directly support the sales cycles and act as the technical voice when selling our product solutions to dealerships. They are skilled communicators who can effectively convey complex technical information to technical and non-technical dealer audiences. Beyond that, they are strong problem solvers who work collaboratively to develop innovative solutions that meet the needs of our customers and help drive revenue.
As the Sales Engineer on our Auto Retail Sales team at Upstart, you will be responsible for supporting the sales team selling to large auto groups, OEM partners, and strategic sales opportunities.The Sales Engineer team at Upstart is a dynamic and highly motivated group of professionals passionate about leveraging technology to drive sales growth. Our Sales Engineers are experts in the automotive space and deeply understand our products and services.
Position Location - This role is available in the following locations: Austin, TX. You will be required to go into the Austin office 3 days per week.
Travel Requirements - Majority of the sales process is accomplished remotely. Some travel for onsite sales meetings may be required for larger or more complex deals. In addition to client travel, you will also be required to travel to our offices for in-office collaboration sessions. If you need to travel to make these meetups, Upstart will cover all travel related expenses.
How you’ll make an impact:
- Develop, organize, plan, create & deliver compelling proof-of-concept demonstrations
- Ensure solutions are in line with Upstart Auto Retail best practices and client requirements
- Work closely with Sales to ensure successful closure of the sales process
- Understand the existing technology of prospective large and enterprise customers
- Liaise with Product Managers to provide feedback from clients about product requirements
- Leverage deep product expertise to ensure new Sales hires are properly trained and are informed on the latest Product feature enhancements and their functionality
- Keep abreast of market trends and product & competitor landscapes
What we’re looking for:
- Minimum qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in a revenue focused pre-sales engineer role
- Deep understanding of SaaS Software
- Experience working in or selling within the automotive industry, including large auto groups
- Strong understanding of automotive industry software integrations, including but not limited to: DMS, CRM, Inventory Management and F&I
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and adept at working with multiple stakeholders
- Preferred qualifications:
- Strong presentation skills
- Strong problem solving and prioritization skills
- Understanding of automotive industry software integrations, including but not limited to: DMS, CRM, Inventory Management and F&I
- Well versed in Automotive Finance and Insurance

At Upstart, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. The anticipated annualized base salary for this position is expected to be within this range. Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location–with our “digital first” philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. Individual pay is also determined by job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.
In addition, Upstart provides employees with target bonuses, equity compensation, and generous benefits packages (including medical, dental, vision, and 401k). Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure. The salary listed below for sales roles is On Target Earnings which includes both salary and commission, assuming 100% target achievement.
